A Brief History of the Known Realm

This list reflects major points in history that have happened in the Known Realm. More detailed explanations appear after the list.
Dates are given in reference to the Minovian Calender (.mc) They are pronounced in three groups. The "dot M C" is normally never spoken. Although many different calanders exist, it is easy to tell them apart by their numeric stylings. It is always represented in print however.

Present Day: (101820.mc)

350 years ago:     Numerous Drow attacks thwarted by Minovians and Elven Navy.

For hundreds of years the Drow had been trying to take over different spheres in the Known Realm. For moments it would seem like they would succeed, but then they would be pushed back by either the Elves or the Minovians. At about this time the Minovians and Elves joined forces to crush the remaining Drow by cutting their supply lines to their home world. Those Drow caught out away from their home sphere perished quickly.

275 years ago:     War of the Realm begins with Outsider attacks. Tarrin is destroyed. Alikarn falls. Felinx and Lears are decimated.

Starting from the southern region of the realm, Reports of entire planets under attack started coming in. Huge asteroid sized ships that were larger than even some Dwarven ships were coming in from outside the Known Realm. These Outsiders used a strange type of gas that turned whoever in hailed it into an undead. They also had powerful weapons that could rip a planet to pieces.

As a show of force no doubt, Tarrin was one of the first spheres encountered and it was ripped into pieces. Alikarn was covered in the gas turning billions of people into zombies. Felinx and Lears were scorched into near ruin. Only the strongest of the species survived by burrowing underground and hiding.

273 years ago:    Thrykka falls under outsider control as they discover how to control the

Thrikreen and use them as their drone soldiers.

When the Outsiders reached Thrykka, there was an uneasy pause in the destruction for a few days as the mighty ships simply hovered above the planet, easily defending themselves from pitiful attempts of the Thrikreen to attack. Exactly what happened next has been open to discussion for hundreds of years. Some how the outsiders gained control of the hive queen and every single Thrikreen in the sphere suddenly and completely came under the control of the Outsiders.

With 20 billion soldiers bread and raised in a hostile environment, genetically engineered to kill, the Outsiders became unstoppable as they swept through the Known Realm killing billions.

225 years ago:    Minovia falls to Outsiders. Elven Navy (along with others) takes flight to hold the outsiders at the sixline.

More than a century ago, Minovians and the Elven Navy combined their intelligence and strength together to defeat the Drow attacks. It was presumed by most that when the outsiders reached Minerva, the same thing would happen. They couldnít have been further from the truth.

The Outsiders seemed to anticipate every Minovian move. They attacked first relentlessly and presumably killed every single minovian leaving only those that had been off world still alive. Seeing this the Elven navy fell back to Sorian to make its final stand there.

185 years ago:    The Kish arrive to assist against the Outsider attacks and reinforce the sixline. The first marker buoys are set up.

The Outsiders had destroyed Minerva. They chased back the Elven Navy. And their Thrikreen soldiers were unstoppably killing everything in their path. Just when it seemed like the entire realm was about to collaps, the Kish arrived. The Kish were mysterious outsiders themselves that came from the Phlogiston path that leads from Grinterland. They wore armor that covered their entire body (to this day no one really knows what they looked like.) Their ships were massive with equally destructive weapons. They set up defensive positions on a line of planets (Grinterland, WAKAKAN!, Gurrnitha, Sorian, Hera, and Giffyania) creating the Sixline. From that day on this line became the holding point from which no Outsider ship could pass. The Kish assisted the Elven Navy and the other space fleets to hold their ground and stop the Outsider invasion.

177 years ago:    Ptalies III leads the Ptalies rush from Sorian, pushing the outsiders back away from the Sixline.

For years the Sixline held as the Kish kept the Outsiders at bay, with neither side winning any ground. Eventually one of the generals, Ptalies the III became the voice that united all the different navies together. His plan was to take every single ship they could get together and rush the Outsiders in one massive attack. Though it was a sound plan, many historians believe that With Ptalies III leading the navies, the gods were in their favor as well.

What started as a single attack turned into a campaign as Ptalies rallied the soldiers and continued to advance over the next two years, picking up survivors and reinforcements along the way.

-Top-
176 years ago:    The work on the Gates is started as a fall back defense in case the outsiders gain momentum and move back to the Sixline once more.

Though it looked like Ptallies was winning his campaign, many feared that the tides would turn and the Outsiders would once more return to take over the Realm. With the help of the Kish, work started on enormous gates around the Phlogiston flows just ahead of each Sphere in the Sixline. These gates are circular with wire meshes in the center of the gate that are retractable to let ships through. They each have a small army encamped at them and enough heavy ballistae and catapults to destroy any ship coming its way. Magical Marker beacons were set out between the gates creating an impenetrable wall that crossed the entire Realm. These markers were designed to remove the air of any ship trying to cross the line, leaving their crew to a quick suffocating death.

175 years ago:    The War of the Realm ends as the Outsiders are pushed into retreating the way they came in.

The Outsiders are finally chased to the end of the Realm by Ptalies ships. Patrols are set up, but the Outsiders never return. The next few decades the entire Realm focuses on the slow process of rebuilding. Most Spheres only have a few thousand people left in them. Innumerable amount of resources went into building tens of thousands of ships that were destroyed. The path to recovery will be a long slow one with little else happening of any importance for quite some time.

78 years ago:    Outsider takeover Thwarted.

A revisit by the Outsiders is Thwarted. A plot was uncovered to take over the Elven King Aros. Of Dorian. While the un-named individual had control over his body, he amassed an even greater Elven fleet than had ever been created before. The problem was that the controlled body of Aros was on the Outsiderís side. The idea was for the outsiders to come in once more and fly their ships through the Realm to just before the Sixline. The Elven army would fly out to meet them, but in an event that is still not exactly known how it was suppose to occur, the entire Elven fleet would join sides with the outsiders and destroy and opposition that remained.

Five adventurers Kael priest, Chester the fire mage, Triton the paladin, Sidel the Halfling, and A Felinx fighter discovered the plot and returned King Arosís spirit to his body before the attack could happen. As the Outsiders came through the system, the Elven Navy flew to great them and did not stop until every single outsider ship was destroyed. Many saw this as a desperate last attempt by the Outsiders as their plan necessitated the use of the entire Elven Navy in order to succeed. It is generally assumed that there would not be any more attacks from the Outsiders.

75 years ago:    Drow Sun Bomb Plot Thwarted.

The Sun Bomb Plot was a desperate attempt by the Drow to devastate the Known Realm. It was originally thought at the time that the Drow had built a construct around their sun capable of detonating it, destroying their crystal sphere and quite possibly one third of the Known Realm. The plot became even more devastating as it was realized that they actually planned to somehow teleport their sun right next to Minovia and then detonate it. This would destroy the central core of the Known Realm and kill millions of beings, while leaving the Drowís crystal sphere intact.

In a surprise attack, they did manage to teleport their sun right next to Minerva and detonate it. The resulting flash blinded many in the spheres nearby, however the explosion never damaged Minerva as it all seemed to be absorbed in some sort of whirlpool effect directly underneath it. It has been theorized that someone knew about the Drow plot and opened up a huge planer door beneath the explosion that drew all the energy into it before being sealed. Who did this, which plane the energy went to, and how they knew about the exact plot remains unknown as any possible clues were taken along with the Drow sun into the doorway.

73 years ago:    Drow Seclusion begins as they are magically trapped in their sphere.

When the blinding flash of light occurred near Minerva, no one knew exactly what happened, except that some great tragedy had somehow been stopped. Once details came to light of the Drow plot, the entire Known Realm worked together to rid themselves of Drow. Kill on sight orders were issued to all militaries. The grand Elven navy of Dorian swept throughout the Realm chasing and destroying Drow ships until they formed a secure armed fleet around Mynrzzydryk. Elder wizards and sages were called in to create strong magic spells that would seal the Drow crystal sphere from anyone traveling in or out of it. Holes in the sphere were closed, anti-teleportation wards were placed, warning markers similar to the ones used on the Sixline were set up and the Drow home world was cut off from the rest of the Realm forever. No one has seen a Drow in the Known Realms since this was done.

-Top-
72 years ago:    Kish leave for their Home world.

With the Drow secluded, the Kish reveal that they recently found out it was actually the Outsiders were actually the Drow backed by a few Illithids from outside the Known Realm. The Drow used this trick so that others in the realm would not attack their home world during the war. With their entire population in seclusion, the Kish believed that all was well in the Known Realm and they took their leave of the realm to return to their home of origin. The sphere is renamed Grinterland, and many descendants of the original populace return to their ancestorís home. Although the current residents are mostly farmers that settled into small towns, the towering defensive structures of the Kish remain behind. Some have never even been entered or explored.

71 years ago:    St. Kael Memorial Church of the Realm is finished.

St Kael was a cleric who was instrumental in reviving the religion dedicated to worshiping the Sisters Aurasay and Naurasay. He also gave during his life time to have a floating church in space created to their worship and the worship of many other gods.

The Church of the Realm as it was called is capable of moving from sphere to sphere through combined prayer helm in its upper most rooms. It travels wherever it is needed most. Many priests have a divination device that lets them know where the CoR is at any time.

70 years ago:    First undead pirates appear.

The beginning of the Undead wars starts as ships report being boarded by skeletal hordes. The attacks are at first seemingly random and few and far between.

-Top-
60 years ago:    Undead gas vaccine invented.

The gas that turned everyone on Alikarn into undead had been a lingering plague for at least a century. Many still fell to its affects. It appeared that many of the undead pirate attacks at first were using this same gas to kill their victims and gain new crew. The Felinxes had a potion to stop the process, but it was not always effective as it needed to be given quickly after contact.

A diligent Felinxian named Forimor worked his entire life to create a vaccine against the gas. Once it was proved to work, it was made and distributed across the entire Known Realm. Every child born is inoculated with the vaccine. Since this has started, there have been reports of some undead still trying to use the gas, but no reports of anyone being infected with it.

55 years ago:    First magic dead zones are reported.

Magic dead zones are known to exist in small pockets here and there on some planets. It was a surprise to find MDZs out in the Phlogiston. At first they were noted on maps and thought to be temporary anomalies.

-Top-
40 years ago:    Undead pirate attacks increase, believed to be more likely guerrilla warfare.

The Undead attacks increase. They become more coordinated. It is discovered that entire ships of undead crew are being lead by more intelligent undead masters. They strike from outside the Phlogiston flows. Without the need for air, or food it is the perfect place for them to lie in wait and attack unsuspecting ships as they pass. Although many suspect there is some greater plan to the attacks, no pattern or plot can be discerned from the raids. Strangely, they never make land fall on any planet and seem to mainly stick to the wildspace between the spheres, only venturing into the spheres themselves on occasion.

Almost every ship during this time travels in a convoy, with at least one or more Elven warships protecting them.

-Top-
30 years ago:    Magic dead zones increase in the phlogiston

It is now well known that MDZs are not anomalies or temporary. Wherever they appear, they stay. The MDZs have been increasing in area so much that captains keep detailed maps on the most current appearances. They also are certain to have skilled sailors on board that can navigate and maneuver without the use of magic.

For obvious reasons, many undead attacks take place in these magic dead zones as the crews are not at their best in these situations.

25 years ago:     Path to the New Realm started.

The Minovian Vyrsus proved the concept of using a teleportation crystal that created a cortex that an entire ship could pass through. Unfortunately the process had limits in distance, and only worked in bonded pairs of crystals. Undaunted, the remaining Minovians banded together and funded an exploration of the lower corridor. Their lore taught them that there was another realm at the end of the flow but it would take years to get to by normal means.

With the process in place, they mined crystals from Alikarn (a feet in and of itself with all the millions of undead there) to use on the explorations. Ships would use the door way to get to the furthest out point they could, set one bonded crystal in space, then travel as far out as they could and set the other crystal.

-Top-
20 years ago:     New Realm Discovered

Although the process of setting teleportal crystals up took years in the mining, transportation and exploration process, it eventually lead to the discovery of the New Realm. Once all the crystals were in place, it only takes approximately 14 days to travel between the realms.

The Elven navy patrols the first portal constantly to make certain the undead plague does not spread to the New Realm.

-Top-
19 years ago:    Realm Migrations begin.

Many races migrate between the realms. Some travel to the New Realm to explore and excape the Undead Attacks, some travel from the New Realm to the Known Realm for their own exploratory reasons. Most surprising is the fact that much of the Minovian population long thought killed in the War of the Realms actually managed to escape through some sort of teleportation device on Minerva all the way to a sphere in the New Realm. The device was destroyed by the outsiders and the Minovians claim that they did not creat it, but it was always on their planet as far back as their recorded history went. Many Minovians begin the journey back home to Minerva.

-Top-
18 years ago:    Gold for Generals Act started to take out undead leaders.

King Aros of Dorion calls for a bounty on any undead leader. It is thought that if all the intelligent leaders of the undead crews are destroyed, then the hordes of simpler undead will be easier to kill. The Gold for Generals Act pays anyone a bounty for the head of any undead leader or a greatly increased bounty for any undead leader brought to them ďaliveĒ. Truth magic, divination, and inspection of the skull by expert mages are all used to determine if it truly was a leader and how important he may have been in the undead army. The captured specimens are magically tortured, questioned and eventually vivisected to try and determine any weaknesses. Rumors of a single undead leader that is behind all the attacks spread.

-Top-
15 years ago:    Enough Minovians return to reclaim Minovia and start reconstruction.

With a few thousand Minovians now back in Minerva, work begins on reconstructing their home planet. The industrious undertaking is expected to take almost a century to complete fully.

In the century after the War of the Realm, many people looked to Minerva as the prime example of what the Outsiders did. Many beings sympathies with the Minovians and offer their help and supplies as best they can.

-Top-
5 years ago:     King Arose is assassinated.

The Gold for Generals Act was a great success. The number of raids had subsided. Undead vessels were actually being hunted down in droves over the last few years. With their leaders gone, the remaining undead ships were easily destroyed. This was apparently the reasoning for King Arosís assassination. His castle on Dorian was attacked by unimaginable creatures. Black robed skeletons that appeared and disappeared at will. Shadows rising from the ground to slay the guards. Strong warriors from wars past rose again to destroy the kingís generals. Aros was found in the dungeon of his castle, apparently trying to escape the attack. His skin was cut to ribbons by the attacks he endured as he fought. His head decapitated and thrust through the end of an unholy spear. His heart removed. An ancient phrase was found scrawled on the wall next to his body. The inscription is in some ancient language that has never been translated.

Nex ut rex planto amicitia pro vulgivagus phasmatis.

4 years ago:    Undead attacks start anew and are worse than ever

The undead attacks come back stronger and harder than before. Now the undead have their own ships purposefully made for them by some unknown race. (or perhaps by themselves, though many mages disagree with this due to the level of complexity of the ships.) The Elven Navy is over whelmed.

-Top-
4 years ago:    King Elimear (King Arosís successor) legalizes privateering to combat the undead raids.

With little experience in organizing a realm wide navy and undead attacks increasing daily, King Elimear legalizes privateering. Paying shipping companies and individual captains to attack and destroy any undead ships or pirates.

2 years ago:     Illithids are reported in the realm.

Before the Kish left, the explained to many mages what the Illithids were and handed over their notes about them. It was excepted that they were the ones behind the mind controlling events and other psionic based attacks during the wars. No one had ever seen an Illithid however besides the drawings the Kish provided.

Over the past few years Illithid ship sightings have increased. A few sailors have even claimed to have seen an Illithid and lived to tell the tale.
